TASH RESOLUTION ON NUTRITION AND HYDRATION Statement of Purpose The purpose of this resolution is to assure that all people regardless of severity of
disability or age receive adequate nutrition, hydration, and humane care. Rationale There are increasing numbers of court decisions supporting the cessation of nutrition and hydration for individuals who are themselves unable to consent to such procedures. TASH believes that all people, regardless of their disabilities, have a right to life, liberty, and protection from treatment that causes pain or death. TASH strongly opposes the position that it would be in the best interest of any person to die rather than live with a disability. TASH strongly opposes any cessation of nutrition or hydration for people regardless of the severity of their disabilities. TASH strongly opposes approaches now advocated by many which authorize third parties to substitute their judgement "on behalf" of a person who has been labeled "incapacitated" in a manner would imply that the person's life is no longer worth living: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, THAT TASH, an international advocacy association of people
with disabilities, their family members, other advocates and people who work in the
disability field will seek to involve itself in litigation and legislation judged to have
the potential to set precedents that will affect the rights of individuals who are at risk
of loss life or health without provision of hydration, nutrition, and medical treatment. |
