Description:

The positive approaches committee adheres to TASH's resolution on positive behavior support by affirming the rights of people with disabilities to receive interventions that are respectful, free of pain and produce positive change for the individual. The positive approaches committee further upholds TASH's resolution to promote the development implementation, evaluation, and dissemination of positive educational and behavioral support practices that are appropriate for use in typical community settings and are consistent with the commitment to a high quality of life and personal satisfaction with life for individuals with severe disabilities.

The overarching goal of the positive approaches committee is broadly disseminate evidence-based information on positive approaches also known as positive behavior support. To achieve this goal, the committee engages in a series of activities that include: Organizing a conference strand on Positive Behavior support; Maintaining a resource contact list for TASH; Collaborating with TASH activities and groups related to Positive Behavior Support; Coordinating the Annual Positive Approaches Awards; Developing a guide to positive behavior support; and Co-Editing special editions of TASH's newsletter

Goals for 2005:
  • Development and Dissemination of a guide of PBS entitled: Working Together: A Guide to Positive Behavior Support for Parents and Professionals
  • Coordinate the positive approaches strand for the annual conference
  • Developing either a TASH tech on PBS basics and an introductory session to the strand to give basic PBS information
  • Coordinate the nomination and delivery of positive approaches awards
  • Develop a special issue of TASH Connections focusing on PBS
  • Continue to focus on the elimination of aversive techniques
