Description:
Acceptance and friendship is at the heart of every community. To feel included means to be accepted. To be included is to have friends and to work and participate in the community fully and completely.
Access to the spiritual and faith-based communities for individuals with disabilities is just as important as accessing education, employment, healthcare, transportation, and community. Individuals with disabilities have a right to have a life to fully express their faith and spirituality which can offer positive supports to people with disabilities as it does for others in our communities.
TASH--an international advocacy association of people with disabilities, their family members, other advocates and people who work in the disability field--believes that all people have the right to faith and spiritual expression including the reflection upon and sharing of spiritual purposes in their lives. The association supports the right of all individuals to express their specific faith-based and/or spirituality practices which welcomes the inclusion of individuals with disabilities. TASH recognizes and supports the integration of spirituality and faith-based practices as an important component of life and respects multiple spiritual views that communicate value and respect for all people.
The Spirituality Committee of TASH exists to support various spiritual and faith-based issues of people with disabilities without advancing or promoting any specific practice. The committee meets once a year at the annual TASH conference, and maintains communication during the year through a list serve. As one of TASH's newer committees, some recent activities have been to sponsor sessions at the annual TASH conference, re-establish an active list serve, and develop section on the TASH website.
