Maryland New Directions Waiver

If you enroll and are approved under the New Directions Waiver you, together with the people who support you or your family members, can have greater control over the money for your support services, so you can plan and direct your life! The Waiver is to start July 1st, 2005.

You and your family or support circle direct:

  • Planning
  • Budgeting
  • Spending

So that you can..

  • Decide where and with whom you or your family member wants to live
  • Hire and Supervise your own staff
  • Choose or create your own services
  • Be in control!
  • Be satisfied and happy with your services.

 Here is a summary of the difference from the current long-term care waiver in Maryland -

Issue Under the Maryland New Directions Waiver Currently
Who Can be Part of this New Waiver Eligibility does not change, however, New Directions will allow up to 100 people (during its first year) to direct their own services. Individuals wanting more control over their services and who are interested in taking more of a management role in their services are good candidates. A child or adult with developmental disabilities or mental retardation, living in Maryland, who meets the Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Who Controls the Money for Your Services? You and your family or supporters with the help of a support broker and fiscal intermediary, get a monthly allowance or budget to buy services. The agency that supports you
Who can legally hire, supervise and fire your support staff? You and your family or supporters The agency that supports you
What kind of agreement or approval is needed for someone to be your provider? You can buy services from people you approve - such as a neighbor, a friend, an agency you want to support you. The agency has to be approved and licensed through the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Administration.
