3-part Session!
TASH Through Our Eyes:
A Participatory Introduction to the "Photovoice"
Method
There will be three sessions,
1-Thursday to learn the technique and receive cameras
2- Friday to assemble exhibit;
3-Satruday am poster session presentation of exhibit
The Photovoice strategy, often used for research,
puts cameras into the hands of people who feel disenfranchised from
decision making processes. The session will provide hands-on
experience with Photovoice. Participants will learn about the
method, document their experiences and impressions of the TASH
Conference with disposable cameras (provided by the presenters),
write short descriptions of their photos, and present an exhibit for
a wider audience.

Yes, Virginia, You Can Eck Out a Living as a Parents' Attorney
One of the biggest obstacles that parents face in making sure that
their special-needs children's due process rights are guarded is finding
an attorney who is knowledgeable about the state and federal protections
available and who is ready, willing and able to take the case. One of the
biggest hurdles that attorneys in private practice and attorneys in public
interest law face is trying to make a living. This break-out session will
focus on tips and strategies to help attorneys make a living in this very
personally satisfying area of law.

"Meeting or Serving Latinos/ Hispanics where they are..."
This
forum will encourage professionals and community members to develop
awareness of factors to consider when connecting with Latinos /Hispanos in
the community. It is intended to guide participants through steps that
should enhance their cultural curiosity, along with their ability to
interact more sensitively with different Spanish speaking groups.

The Parent As An Advocate In The Medical Insurance Context
Appropriate and, often, specialized treatment is needed for children with
special needs. Obtaining medical insurance authorization or reimbursement
for specialized services such as therapy or medical equipment is not
always a simple process. The following presentation will show you how to
more easily maze through your medical insurance policy and get much needed
benefits authorized or paid. Speakers: Marla Kraus

DART: A Community Response to the Abuse of People with Disabilities
This
workshop is a panel discussion on the collaboration formed by agencies in
Milwaukee
to address abuse and violence against people with disabilities.
Panelists will be members of DART (Disability Abuse Response Team).

The Power of the Disability Vote =
Voting is an important aspect of community participation; however,
there are many barriers which result in people with disabilities not
casting a ballot. This session will explore these barriers, ways to
increase voter turnout, and initiatives to make voting accessible.

The 2004 Amendments to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act:
What did Congress "Improve?"
This
session is targeted for school personnel, parents and advocates.
This will be an interactive presentation that allows discuss of the
amendments with ample opportunity for questions.

Self-Advocates Building Local Advocacy Alliances
This interactive panel will share experiences from a self-advocacy
coalition in Washington, DC, as they have created alliances and gained
membership on dozens of government, community, and advocacy boards that
make decisions affecting the lives of people with disabilities.
