Innovative
ideas continue to emerge for providing personalized and high quality
supports for young children with significant disabilities and their
families. This strand will showcase some of the latest research and
recommended practices in the use of augmentative and alternative
communication within naturally occurring contexts. In addition, this
strand will explore complex issues related to the implementation of
exemplary inclusive education in early childhood settings.

Transitions for Young Children with Significant Disabilities and/or
Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Backgrounds
Transitions for young children with significant disabilities and from
culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are challenging. In this
presentation, we describe transition barriers and promising strategies
identified by families and providers through regional forums. Information
covers transitions from early intervention to kindergarten.

The Transition Tool Kit: Supporting
the Transition of Young Children with Challenging Behavior
Challenging behavior is one of early educators' greatest concerns when
promoting and providing quality early education and the inclusion of young
children. This workshop will provide participants with a description of
strategies and supports that are a part of an intervention package to help
young children with challenging behavior transition into preschool
settings. Participants will learn about strategies that help prevent
challenging behavior, teach new skills, and foster new ways to respond to
challenging behavior. Presenters will share evaluation information on the
utility of the toolkit and participants will receive a manual based on
early childhood classroom routines that includes

Adaptations and Accommodations for Young Children with Severe
Disabilities in Inclusive Settings
Presenters will first address the discrepancy between general early
childhood curriculum guided by the developmentally appropriate practice
and the individual needs of young children with severe disabilities. Then
strategies for adaptations and accommodations in early inclusive
programming will be discussed.

Improving Communication for Children with Pervasive Developmental
Disorders
In five boys (3-4), with a PDD, we studied the effectiveness of an
augmentative communication system. Parents facilitated through a
naturalistic, play-based, incidental teaching format. Some participants
now have abandoned the device because they are able to speak.

This workshop will review the important topics in Early
Childhood and Family Support advocacy and policy at the national
level and is becoming a popular annual event! Participants will

The Evolution of an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)
System for a Preschool Child with Multiple Disabilities
This
applied research study reports the process used to develop an AAC system
for a young child attending an inclusive community child care program.
Effectiveness of the instruction and use of her AAC system within her
preschool program was documented.

Preliminary Findings from a Survey of Care Providers

will share preliminary findings from an interview study of care providers
of children with autism or cerebral palsy and nonsymbolic communication.

communication breakdown and address implications of these findings.

Diagnosing Autism in Young Children - What are the early warning signs?
There is a growing epidemic in
the
United States
where one in 166 children demonstrate a unique developmental patters
collectively known by the synonymous terms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD),
pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) or autism. This presentation will
provide participants with critical information about the early warning
signs and the importance of early and accurate diagnosis.

Maximizing Participation in the Inclusive Early Childhood Classroom
What
is the importance of the social context in the education of children with
significant disabilities? This
qualitative case study of an inclusive preschool classroom illustrates how
one preschool teacher scaffolds participation of children identified with
mild to moderate disabilities so that all children participate as valued
members of the classroom community.

A Research study: Training teachers to use
strategies for supporting social interactions for children with moderate
to severe disabilities in inclusive preschool classrooms
Two
teachers were trained to use strategies for supporting social interactions
in inclusive classrooms. This
study investigated the effects of training on teaching behaviors using
single-participant multiple baseline design.
The findings of the study will be presented and discussed.
