Education-Alternate Assessment                             

This strand deals with alternate assessment topics such as development, implementation, scoring, and instructional influence. As alternate assessment continues to be refined to reflect not only federal regulations but instructional significance, as well and as the data begin to inform as to the instructional impact as a result of assessment, these issues and the presentations that will address them are important for those who wish to improve educational outcomes for students labeled with severe disabilities.

The ACSESS Project: Adapted Collaborative Strategies for Evaluating Students' Strengths

Successful inclusive education for children with severe disabilities requires collaboration and access to accurate, relevant information about  students' cognitive strengths. The ACSESS Project is a DoE funded project developing a model for collaborative, adapted assessments for children labeled with severe disabilities.

Although most states have alternate assessments, questions continue about the best way to assess all students.  This session will describe a pilot study of two alternate assessment formats, conducted in seven states.  Assessment examples and pilot results will be shared.

Trends in large-scale Assessment of Students with Disabilities

This presentation reports on trends in statewide assessment of students with disabilities from 1990-2003.  Presenters will also convey results from a 2005 survey of state special education directors about test accommodations, alternate assessments, universal design and other assessment issues.

Functional Assessment and Program Planning for Individuals with Severe Disabilities
Using longitudinal data collected on individuals with severe disabilities (e.g., Cri-du-chat syndrome), we will present a model using standardized assessments as functional assessments, providing improved program development information. Effective program planning is  essential in providing quality interventions for this population.
