An Extreme Makeover" the Agency Edition

Using the popular notion that plastic surgery changes one for the better, this presentation unveils the inadequacy of superficial system change.  Nips and tucks improve appearances for a while.  However, transformation in the service provider culture often requires radical surgery -- pretty veneers and silicone just don't cut it.  For lasting agency change, an extreme amount of hard work must come first.  Come learn how Community Living Services in southeastern Michigan is doing that very work.
Speakers: Kathleen Kovach, Annette Downey

9:45 am - 12:00 pm
Essential Elements of Self-Determination

We have much to be grateful for in the progress towards person-centeredness and self-determination arrangements for people's lives.  This presentation will address the various elements of these emphases and other matters that broaden and deepen the quality of our work on person-centeredness and self-determination.

Practical, Purposeful & Powerful Learning about Self-Determination

Are We There Yet? How A Large Ohio Organization Moved to Support Control and Choice
Four years ago one of the largest agencies providing supports to people with disabilities in Ohio set a goal that all 5700 people served would  control how resources are spent. The  goal of individual budgets for all people served in Hamilton County ( Cincinnati , OH )  by 2007 was developed by a planning committee of individuals served, family members, staff and supervisors working with the Superintendent. This session will detail how this organization shifted control and choice to the individuals served.  We describe changes in structure, individual and family members' perception of the changes, effects on the budget, what worked and what didn't work, and future directions.

Speakers: Joseph Erpenbeck, Dawn Rothe
