, Inclusion…. All of these goals can only be achieved by people with
disabilities at the helm, steering the course of their lives. This strand
includes a variety of sessions, all focused on the concept of
self-direction.

Learning Together: Innovations in Inclusive Conference and Training
Events
This
session will describe how a group of people with disabilities, family
members, advocates and support providers designed and implemented a series
of ongoing training and conference events for people with disabilities to
attend alongside their support staff and/or family members. The
presentation will include a discussion on structuring the event and ideas
on obtaining funding to cover event costs while offering a low/no
registration fee to participants. The presentation will also cover the
development of a self-advocacy initiative, VOICES, which helps people with
disabilities gain the empowerment skills and promotes community-building
activities to ensure full participation.

A Self-Directed Approach to Supporting People whose Behavior Challenges
Others
This
session will provide information regarding an proactive approach to
support students and adults who experience cognitive disabilities and/or
issues related to the autism spectrum and are able to speak or use
augmentative communication. Strategies include ways to engage individuals
who have a means of communication to be active in determining the function
of their behavior and the designing of alternative ways to manage
conflicts, avoid problems with others, and increase appropriate skills get
what they need. The session is
specifically for parents, direct support staff, and teachers.

Finding your Place in Community: Help Others to Help Yourself
Michael
Tada, a man with significant disability and will present his experiences
in volunteering at several community agencies and report how these
experiences have changed his life. He will also call other self advocates
to act in this way. Teresa Whelley will ground Michael's perceptions and
experiences in theories of community inclusion.

Facilitating Consumer Direction through the Use of Intermediary Service
Organizations
This
presentation provides a description of Intermediary Service Organizations
(ISOs), as well as how they facilitate Consumer Direction. We
will focus specifically on the 70-6 Fiscal/Employer Agent (F/EA) ISO
model, explaining the responsibilities of both the F/EA and the consumers
using the F/EA.

Maryland
New Direction Waiver
This
presentation will showcase the success of the My Life Going FAR project
that TASH has been conducting over the past year.
In partnership with the Maryland Developmental Disabilities
Administration, TASH has been working with individiuals and their families
to create truly self directed person centered plans that will take
advantage of
Maryland
's Independence Plus Medicaid waiver called New Directions.
The My Life Going FAR project is funded through a three-year grant
from the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council.
A network of mentors and trainers have been created across the
state to bring the principles of self determination to those who desire to
self direct their own services and supports.
Let us share how people with disabilities and their trusted allies
are starting to take more control of the services.

Helping People with Disabilities Find "A Place to Call Home":
Wisconsin Stories of Facilitating Home Ownership, Creating a Housing Trust
and Utilizing Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers
Discussion about three innovative efforts in Wisconsin to assist
people with disabilities to have a home of their own:
a statewide non-profit organization
dedicated to promoting homeownership for people with disabilities; a
statewide, pooled housing trust for people with disabilities; and an
collaborative effort between an independent living center and a local
housing authority to assist people with disabilities to use Section 8
Housing Choice Vouchers for home ownership.

What
do consumers think about the services they receive? We've all asked the
question, but where are the answers? This unique "consumer
report" project is asking questions and publishing answers. The
results will assist others who are "shopping" for providers.

Self-Determination vs. Self Regulation: Two Opposing Views--Is There
Any Common Ground?
This
presentation will examine the differences between self-regulation and
self-determination. The goal is not to argue which is best practice but to
gain greater understanding in terms of their defining characteristics and
beliefs that separate and differentiate the two as well as discuss whether
any similarities exist. Secondly, a multiple open-ended survey has been
developed to examine the beliefs of pre-service teachers on the continuum
of self-determination vs. self-regulation in their current understanding
and practice. Students at a mid-western university were given case
scenarios of individuals interacting in various problem-solving or
conflict situations.

Ten Years of Consumer Directed Care...Lessons
Learned
Based
on information derived from ten years of providing fiscal management
supports, customer feedback, and supporting new state start up.
This session will offer practical advice to persons interested in
developing and implementing a fiscal management system for self directed
services. Leaders in the
pioneer network will share their focus process, success and lessons
learned, as well as suggestions on understanding the complexities of what
to expect when putting self-directed principles and tools in practice.

Removing Barriers to the Community through Choice
Making for Students with Disabilities
Diverse
students with severe disabilities can overcome barriers to community
